SLLC Community Coordinator (UCD Sustainable Living/Learning Communities)
(Student Assistant III paid at $15.25/hour, ~6 hours per week)

The SLLC is a group of programs in the Orchard Park neighborhood (West Campus) that work towards environmental and social sustainability through experiential learning and student leadership. Member programs of the SLLC include the Student Farm, ASUCD Campus Center for the Environment (incl. Project Compost + Community Gardens), Feminist Research Institute, DLab, and the Domes & Tri Co-op living communities. This position is designed for an engaged student to help lead SLLC communities by helping to coordinate and lead community meetings, and assist in the coordination, publicity and communication amongst projects and member programs of the SLLC. Position Description:

Assist the collaborative community of the SLLC (aka ‘Collab’) in coordinating all aspects of communication and meeting planning.  This individual will attend the majority of SLLC meetings and events of the SLLC, and serve as point of contact for new participants as well as various community members.  This person will stay current on the weekly activities of the group and help direct day-to-day work of the community towards long-term goals. Work tasks include: 

1. Creating agendas, taking meeting notes, and sharing materials for the Collab and ongoing projects of the SLLC,
2. Communicating with participants about scheduling and reserving rooms for SLLC meetings when necessary,
3. Managing shared online documents and contact information for SLLC participants and interested parties via the SLLC listserv (currently a google group),
4. Writing and managing updates to the SLLC website, in collaboration with fellow students and staff, 
5. Assisting in identifying and applying to grants for SLLC projects,
6. Doing community outreach and coordinating publicity (via blog posts, new articles, etc.) of the SLLC’s accomplishments,
7. Opportunities to propose new community projects for the SLLC, in line with personal strengths and interests.

On-the-job training will include appropriate communication skills workshops when offered by member programs of the SLLC.  Training and Demonstration will be provided as needed for website editing and management.  Work will be done independently with supervision or in collaboration/with support as needed from staff of the SLLC, Student Farm and/or Solar Community Housing Association (which manages the Domes & Tri Co-op properties.)

Job Expectations: 

Average of 6 hours weekly (with opportunities for additional hours, based on grant/project funding), scheduled independently. Twice-monthly check in with SLLC staff, individually or at committee meetings. Attendance of a majority of SLLC meetings and functions. Ongoing participation in SLLC goals and vision planning. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

General knowledge of sustainable living, sustainable food systems, and food justice.   Competence with on-line communications via email and use of shared online listservs and documents. Ability to work through Fall quarter (or beyond.) Competence with simple website management.  Demonstrated competency in communication with diverse groups and in communication in the workplace.  Intent to be committed, prompt, communicative, inclusive, and open-minded. Must be a UCD student.  

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

Previous recent experience living, working, or otherwise participating (and/or helping organize) in at least one of the SLLC communities as a UCD student. Potential for working in this position for at least 3 quarters. College-level coursework in subjects such as environmental sustainable design, community development, ethnic or cultural studies, food systems, communications, or other education that supports effectiveness in this position. Experience with self-governance and consensus decision-making.  Previous experience leading peer groups.
